What a self-service kiosk should take off the box office

On a busy evening, the queue at the box office decides how many customers make the start of the film. Most of that queue is not complicated: someone collecting a ticket they already bought, someone buying two seats for the next show, someone paying by card. Cinema kiosk software exists to move those transactions out of the queue, so staff can spend their time on the customers who actually need a person.

Bigger Picture kiosks handle ticket purchase and collection in the lobby, with contactless payment and no staff involvement. The kiosk is a channel of the platform, not a separate system with its own allocation, so a seat sold at the kiosk disappears from the website, the app and the box office at the same moment.

How cinema kiosk software connects to the rest of the operation

The kiosk reads the same seat inventory, showtimes and pricing rules as the website, the mobile app, the box office and the call centre. Pricing rules defined by showtime, day, screen, format, channel or audience segment apply at the kiosk exactly as they do everywhere else. When the commercial team changes a price or releases a block of held seats, the kiosk shows it without a separate update.

Every kiosk sale is written to the same transaction record as the rest of the operation. A refund taken at the box office on a kiosk purchase is recorded against the original transaction, on the fiscal document and in the revenue report. For finance, the kiosk is one more channel in the same ledger, not a terminal whose takings have to be matched by hand at the end of the day.

Membership benefits are evaluated at the moment of purchase, so a member receives the same entitlement at the kiosk as online or at the counter. The customer identifies themselves, and the rules do the rest. Nobody has to explain to a regular why the price on the screen is different from the price on the website.

What the kiosk does

Ticket purchase

Showtime and seat selection on the live seat map, with the same pricing rules as every other channel.

Collection of online bookings

Customers who bought on the website or in the app collect at the kiosk instead of queuing at the box office.

Contactless payment

Contactless EMV card payments, settled in the same ledger as sales from every other channel.

QR admission

Tickets issued with a QR code, so the customer can go straight from the kiosk to the auditorium entrance.

Member benefits

Membership entitlements and benefits redeemed at the kiosk exactly as they are online or at the counter.

Attraction use cases

In attractions, kiosks also handle prepaid balance top-ups and waiver signing on arrival.

Kiosks, QR admission and the queue at peak

A kiosk on its own only moves a queue from one place to another. The gain comes from combining it with online sales and QR admission, so that a large share of customers either arrive with a ticket already on their phone or spend a few seconds at a kiosk and walk straight to the screen. The box office is then left with group sales, problem cases and customers who prefer to pay cash.

That is what happened at an Israeli exhibitor that runs on Bigger Picture. Queue time at peak dropped once kiosks and QR admission carried a share of the traffic, and the weekend box office stopped being the constraint on the evening. The same customer record that holds the club membership also holds the kiosk purchase, so the operator can see which members use which channel.

The practical decisions are about placement and mix: how many kiosks each site needs, where they sit relative to the entrance and the concession stand, and which transactions you want to steer towards them. Attendance reporting by hour and by site gives you the evidence for those decisions instead of a guess based on a single busy Saturday.

Selling more than a ticket

A kiosk transaction is also a moment of purchase where an offer can be shown. The recommendation layer in Bigger Picture matches films, products, vouchers and promotions to each customer across web, app, kiosk and point of sale, and upsell recommendations are presented at the moment of purchase. Which offers appear at the kiosk, and for which customers, is part of the configuration you set with the commercial team.

Because the kiosk, the website, the app and digital signage are fed by the same catalogue and pricing, an offer launched by head office appears consistently in every channel, and its results can be measured on the same transaction record as the ticket.

Hardware, setup and multi-site rollout

To run kiosks, a site needs an internet connection and the kiosk equipment. The platform is cloud-native, running on AWS and Kubernetes, so there are no servers in the building and updates are applied centrally to every kiosk in the circuit. The choice of hardware and payment terminal is agreed during implementation, based on the site and the payment provider.

For circuits, head office configures pricing, permissions and content once and applies them to every site. Opening a new complex means adding its kiosks to an existing configuration rather than starting a separate project.

Kiosks outside the cinema

The same self-service model works in attractions. In a trampoline park, the kiosk is where a visitor who did not sign in advance completes a digital waiver on arrival. In a family entertainment center, it is where a family tops up a prepaid balance spent across activities, the arcade and food. Mixed venues run all of these on one platform.

Frequently asked questions

What is cinema kiosk software?

It is the software that runs self-service ticketing terminals in the lobby, letting customers buy or collect tickets and pay without staff. In Bigger Picture the kiosk is a channel of the platform, sharing one seat inventory and one transaction record with every other channel.

Can customers collect tickets bought online at the kiosk?

Yes. Customers who bought on the website or in the app collect at the kiosk instead of queuing at the box office.

Does the kiosk use the same prices as the website and the box office?

Yes. All channels share the same seat inventory and the same pricing rules, so a seat sold at the kiosk is unavailable everywhere else at the same moment.

Do member benefits work at the kiosk?

Yes. Membership benefits are evaluated at the moment of purchase, so the same entitlement applies online, at the kiosk and at the box office.

What does a site need to run kiosks?

An internet connection and kiosk equipment. The platform is cloud-native, so there is nothing to install on site and updates are applied centrally.
